Finding Order Out of Disorder

Some days I awake early, without the alarm, full of messages received from the Infinite Intelligence that Is.

It started with concern yesterday, reflecting on how my friends and clients all throughout the Middle East are coping.

Then, I pondered about all of the retreat travel I have coming up and how that would play out through all the global instability.

And so, I write this hoping to offer words of support and encouragement amidst these fiery times we are in.

In dreamtime, I was reminded how San Pedro cacti can withstand long periods of drought under the harsh sun,

how desert wildflowers explode in color after a single rainfall,

and how fungi quietly transform decay into fertile soil underneath the forest floor.

Digesting the Symbology of the Ancient Prophecies

15 years ago in India, I sat in satsang (a sacred gathering), at the feet of a swami who was giving a teaching about the Kali Yuga.

In the ancient Indian scriptures, there are 4 cycles of cosmic time cycles called yugas that last for thousands of years, with varying interpretations on duration.

Currently, we are in the Kali Yuga, which is the described as the age of moral decline.

Purists say we are in it for another 400,000 years; while Bhavishya Malika prophecies from the 15th & 16th centuries point to the ending of the Kali Yuga between 2025 – 2032. And other modern interpretations look at its ending as more of a global shift in consciousness between 2025-2080.

However, in all the interpretations of the ancient prophecies, there is an agreement that the Kali Yuga is a world where wealth, power and over-gratification overthrows virtue.

It is a time of exploiting the land, political corruption and war.

What comes after the Kali Yuga is the Satya Yuga, a golden age where human consciousness has evolved from Machiavellian competition to sustainable co-operation.

If we view humanity as a giant building, we are in an under construction phase where the scaffolding has been put up, and demolition is well underway.

I remember sitting at the feet of the great swami, feeling terrified at all the talk of war and disintegration. Yet, there was a great feeling of hope and trust.

He said the paradox of the grand design was that as suffering increases in the coming years, it will fuel the inner journey for Truth.

The Inner Mirror of Global Affairs

And so what do we do with such grandiose prophecies in our day to day lives?

It is known through many ancient traditions that the macrocosmic world mirrors the microcosmic inner world of each individual on the planet. The yogis said “Yatha pinde tatha brahmande,” as within the body, so within the cosmos.

And so, the answer is to go within and investigate firstly how the shadow aspects of our psyche is mirroring global affairs, and then secondly, to commit to emerging from the shadows.

If we really sit and contemplate on the nature of why all the ongoing wars are occurring, it comes down to an attachment to identity.

Each group in power responsible for attacking the other has become so attached to their political, economic, national, religious or ideological identity that they perceive there is no room for the opposition at the table.

You might think, “well, I am openminded, and not overly attached to my identity, so my individual consciousness cannot possibly be contributing to the collective consciousness’s energy that fuels wars.”

Have you ever …

-chosen the fastest solution to a problem rather than the most compassionate one?

-ever hoarded time, credit or recognition at work because you feared someone else might get ahead of you?

– ended a relationship without having the difficult conversation, and chose to disappear instead of any attempt at reconciliation or at the very least closure?

– refused to apologize because admitting fault would threaten the identity you have built for yourself?

– felt threatened when someone else’s success appeared to take something away from you?

-competed for status, attention or validation in subtle ways you barely noticed?

-blamed others for emotions you weren’t ready to face within yourself?

-reacted defensively when someone pointed out something uncomfortable about your behavior?

The scale may be vastly different, but the pattern of energy is the same.

Nations eliminate threats just as individuals do.

The global manifestation of world chaos is nothing more than billions of personal choices layered on top of one another.

The inner work of this yuga we are in is not simply to judge the conflicts of the world, but to recognize the subtle ways those same energies live within us.

Every time we choose curiosity over condemnation…

dialogue over domination…

compassion over control…

we interrupt the ancient pattern that has fueled human conflict for centuries.

Emerging out of the Shadows

My Jungian psychoanalyst Buddhamom in Switzerland reminded me that Jung said that “in all chaos there is a cosmos, in all disorder a secret order.”

If there is a global scarcity consciousness playing out that revolves around racing to control territory and natural resources, masked in religious and ideological differences; then, we must choose to see this as an opportunity, rather than get swept up by the gloom and doom of it all.

Yes, part of the inner work of shifting global consciousness is to understand and re-pattern your shadows.

The next step is as the shamans say, you must learn to walk the path of beauty.

Just as the Dalai Lama rebuilt his home after being exiled from Tibet,

just as indigenous cultures somehow preserved ancient healing wisdom after centuries of displacement and colonization,

just as Anne Frank chose to search for beauty despite the horrors of the concentration camp…

There is great beauty to be found in this world if we shift our attention to look for it.

So really ask yourself what lights up your heart? Interior design, environmental conservation, music production, animal care?

It doesn’t matter, so long as you are sharing it with your communities in the spirit of cooperation.

This is the medicine the world needs right now.

Many saints say we are in the best age for spiritual awakening because everywhere you look, there is so much mud to compost, so your inner lotus can bloom.
